Cosfest 2010 – Day 1

Day 1 of Cosfest ended at Downtown East undergoing renovation. Drizzle in the afternoon could not deter the spirit of most people, and the new layout for booths help create spaces for interaction indoors. The crowd for Day 1 is smaller compared to previous years. Some photographers and on-lookers went to check out Shine Youth Festival at *scape, while others decide to grab some good rest ahead of World Cup matches, especially after watching the late drama between Uruguay and Ghana.

Alodia & Ashley Gosiengfiao were in town today for Animax Ani-mates meet and greet session. A few dozen of people brave the rain at Camp Pong and swarm towards the sisters the moment they appear. The meet and greet session allows fans to meet with their favourite ani-mates, and for today it’s the cosplaying twins.

No GCA 2010, Yes Starfest

“It is a regrettable, but necessary decision”, said the managing director of LMI Asia, a subsidiary of Leipziger Messe International (LMI), Joerg Zeissig. Citing economic climate, the Game Convention Asia organizer has pulled the plug for GCA 2010, which is already scheduled to be held 8 – 12 September 2010. Statistics from Cnet, the four-day event attracted 80 exhibitors and 102,500 visitors, and was the venue for major software houses such as Electronic Arts and Eidos, to showcase their latest titles. A regional cosplay competition was also added to the mix in 2008 to increase public awareness and participation. A return of the event has not been ruled out, as the organizer ”will continue to keep an eye on the Asian games market so that we can pick up again with new concepts if this becomes appropriate”

GCA 2010 may no longer be on the Singapore calendar, but there is a new event to look forward to. Starfest, a new event by Singapore Cosplay Club, will take place from 31 May to 6 June. The organizers of Cosfest decides to move away from cosplay-centric event to one which showcase anime, models and figurines. People can also look forward to performance by World Cosplay Summit Singapore semi-finalist.

The end of GACC 2010 does not mark the end of events in Malaysia. Coming up is KYAN!ME 2010, shaping up to be the biggest anime / cosplay event in East Malaysia. The competitions open for application covers a white range of topics, from various cosplay competition to anime exams to ramen eating competition. There will also be performances and side events, and you can attend various workshops related to Japanese culture.
